How Long Do Tires Last?

Tires are engineered to be long-lasting, making your drives in the Meridian, Philadelphia, and Laurel, Mississippi, areas, smooth and safe. However, even though they typically last up to 15,000 miles with proper care, like most things in life, they don’t last forever.

At BMW of Meridian, we know you want to get the most out of your vehicle. Learning about the lifespan of your tires, what can be done to lengthen it, and knowing when to get new tires all play into that. Luckily enough, we’re here to help.

What Is the Lifespan of Car Tires?

Though your tires’ longevity depends on several factors, drivers can expect their car tires to last anywhere from 12,000 miles to 15,000 miles, or three to four years. However, this duration may vary, depending on your driving habits.

If you fall into any of the following categories, you may need to have your tires replaced more frequently:

  • Driving on dirt roads
  • Off-roading on rocky or uneven terrain
  • Towing or hauling often
  • Don’t keep up with tire maintenance
  • Frequent trips at high speeds (highway driving)

How To Make Your Tires Last Longer

There are things you can do to ensure you get the most out of your set of wheels. Proper care is important, but paying attention to your driving habits can also result in your tires outlasting the typical lifespan.

  • Proper Maintenance: The best thing you can do to prolong your tires’ life is preventive maintenance. This includes tire rotation, tire balancing, proper wheel alignment, and ensuring the right amount of pressure is always in your tires.
  • Driving Habits: When you keep to smoothly paved roads, limit your cargo, and drive at the speed limit, your tires don’t need to work harder. Thus, they wear slower, giving you a set that will last longer.

Signs You Need New Tires

Even with the best care and smart driving habits, your tires will begin to stop working as they should over time. Luckily, if you pay attention, you can spot the signs, so that you can replace or repair your tires before possible blowouts or tire failure occurs.

  • Low Tire Tread: One of the first signs that your tires are aging is your tire tread isn’t as thick as it used to be. If you can see your treading is low—or even to the point where they have gone bald—it’s time for tire replacement.
  • Cracked Tires: Cracking can also occur on your tires’ sidewalls over time, or by driving a lot on rough roads. This can cause air to leak out and result in flat tires or blowouts, so install a new set as soon as possible.
  • Tire Vibration: If you’re noticing your vehicle is vibrating more than usual, even while driving on smooth roads, the cause could be aging tires. Time to go tire shopping!
